A collaboration with the mobile video game , ran from December 15–25, 2024. The collaboration included five characters from the game in the style of five respective characters, two covers of the anime theme songs “Chainsaw Blood” and “Fighting Song”, login gifts, and more. “Chainsaw Man” will likely go down as one of the greatest anime of all time solely based on the manga – the Japanese comic book – it is adapted from. “Chainsaw Man” tells the story of Denji, a goofy, 16-year-old orphan who is recruited by Tokyo’s Public Safety Bureau to hunt “devils” – a race of supernatural entities which manifest the collective power of, and are named after, humanity’s fears. Possessing an unquenchable thirst for human blood and suffering, devils such as the Gun Devil, Eternity Devil and Darkness Devil have slain countless people.
After a two-year wait and much anticipation from fans, the first episode of “Chainsaw Man” premiered on Oct. 11 on Japanese TV, Hulu and , a popular anime streaming platform. New, 24-minute installments are released every Tuesday and the series is currently on its seventh episode as of this article’s publishing. After only a month and a half on the air, “Chainsaw Man” is already a bonafide hit and has achieved critical acclaim along with a dedicated fanbase.
Although the popularity of Japanese anime has not quite hit the American mainstream yet and pales in comparison to recent franchise series such as “” and “Andor,” stellar shows such as “Chainsaw Man” are making a lasting impression on those turning in and helping the genre gain a foothold.
In recent years, industry-shaking anime such as “,” “Jutsu Kaisen” and “” have staggered the entertainment industry corporate overlords and have become beloved among new generations, especially Gen-Z. In fact, MAPPA, the same Japanese Animation studio behind the last two shows, is at the helm of “Chainsaw Man” – a more than modest indicator of the popularity still to come. Nonetheless, even if most Americans will only experience anime within the storefronts of mall retailers like Spencer’s and Hot Topic, its prevalence will only grow as time goes on.
