Sakura Trick is one of the earliest examples of yuri anime and remains one of the sweetest. In it, best friends Haruka and And Yuu spiral when they are separated in class. Terrified that she will lose her best friend, Haruka impulsively kisses Yuu. This moment of spontaneous intimacy kickstarts a secret romance between the two. Lots and lots of kissing follow.
Yuri can describe any anime or manga series (or other derivative media, i.e., fan fiction, film, etc.) that shows intense emotional connection, romantic love or physical desire between women. Yuri is not a genre confined by the gender or age of the audience, but by the *perception* of the audience.
Neither of us are wrong. Both of those are “Yuri” as we understand it. There is room enough in this youngest genre of anime and manga that we can set the tent poles wherever we’d like. And we might as well make the tent as big as possible.

Yuri is an anime genre that’s focused on queer relationships between two female characters. Also known as GL anime – for girls love anime – these can include anything from cute and romantic stories known as shojo ai to steamy and explicit hentai series. The GL genre is a place where LGBTQ+ relationships take center stage by highlight WLW stories. While it can occasionally include tropes that aren’t reflective of gay people in the real world, it’s still great to see same-sex love flourish in the anime world. Let’s take a moment to celebrate a few of these wonderful yuri couples.
