Ixion Saga Dimensional Transfer is an anime television show out of Japan. It stars Kon Hokaze, also known as DT, who is voiced by Takuya Equchi. Ixion Saga DT follows Kon’s adventures after his love for video games becomes a life within his favorite video game. At the beginning of the series, Kon Hokaze is an ordinary boy by most standards but a hardcore lover of the online video game Ixion Saga. The adventure moves out of the ordinary and into the extraordinary when he answers a female gamer’s request for help. Instead of it being a summons into the real world, the his answer transports him to a princess within the video game land of Mira. He rescues the princess by accident and this starts him on a series of adventures in Mira. Kon now must act as part of the princess’ honor guard as he travels through the land of Mira, which stands on the verge of either war or peace. The best hope for peace is an arranged marriage with a neighboring Prince, but danger threatens from within the kingdom. Now it is up to Kon and the other fighters to protect the princess against her enemies.

Ixion Saga: Dimension Transfer

I had no clue what to expect from this series, other than being based off an online RPG (oh why does that sound sooo familiar?). Unlike Show that Must Not be Named, Ixion Saga from start to finish was completely ridiculous and full of laughs and things an avid gamer would take note of. At times, I wasn’t sure if it would abruptly stop and wallow in melodrama, but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the case as the director of the first half of Gintama, Shinji Takamatsu is known for pure comedy such as Nichibros. Plus there were tons of references to Final Fantasy including a slightly remixed version of the iconic FF7 boss music. If you’re expecting something DEEP and PROFOUND, please turn around now. It *could* get serious, but I’m betting against it and hope that turns out to be false.

Honestly, that was a very ridiculous episode but in the good kind of way. I swear, I DID NOT see those dragon boots being used in..such the way they were used. Ouch, but with that comes some video gaming 101: never, ever name your attacks to be ridiculously long or you’ll be left wide open in other ways than one. Nothing special on the production side, for a Brain’s Base series it’s awfully cheap but perhaps all the money went to Tonari. Music was fine, but I do like the choice of voice actors here: notably Jun Fukuyama as our token trap character, Hiroshi Kamiya as yet another villain (was Natsume his only sweet/kind role?) and Kazuya Nakai as Sainglain, whom I was hoping to say some engrish lines, given his notable role as Masamune Date from Sengoku Basara which was created by Capcom, who also created Ixion Saga. Still, if Ixion Saga stays the way it is now, I’ll definitely enjoy watching it. Other notable names like Yuuki Kaji (as Variation..yes that’s a name) are present and I expect more to come in the following weeks.

In a way, Ixion Saga may be the truly under-rated title of Fall as Shinsekai Yori relinquished that once more people heard about it. For once, I trust the director and his resume.

The Japanese anime television series Ixion Saga Dimensional Transfer (DT, Ikushion Saga D T) is based on Capcom’s online game Ixion Saga. It premiered on October 6, 2012, and ran until March 30, 2013. It’s been adapted into two manga series and a light novel series as well.

THE STAFF – Animated by Brain’s Base, a studio with very good production values and a mostly mediocre roster. Their best works to date are Baccano and Penguindrum and even them were just lively and colorful but not exactly masterpieces. – Directed by Takamatsu Shinji, who has directed numerous famous anime throughout the years (Gundam Wing, School Rumble, Gintama) and has experience with many genres to boot.- Based on a videogame by Capcom. I haven’t played it but it seems to be mediocre, just like most of what the company does outside its usual fighting games. PROPER MINDSET Ixion Saga is a parody of JRPGs, thus half the time it makes fun of the various stereotypes they have, with added meta-humor by the protagonist who loves to break the fourth wall and compare everything to games. So you sort of need to be a gamer to get what they are talking about. Half the OTHER time the jokes have to do with… balls. Male genitalia that is, from transvestites, to those with problematic erections, to those who lost their family jewels. It becomes unsettling and repeats too often to the point it may drive away those who are not into gay jokes or penis jokes. SCRIPT The story is about a gamer (fad of the year; we got 4 shows with gamers in a short amount of time) who gets magically transferred to a videogame world. He is immediately added to the group of bodyguards of a child princess, who is chased around by an opposing army. Being a parody means that you must not expect much of a plot, since it’s all an excuse for making fun of stereotypes. Most of the episodes have completely random plots and some of them don’t even feel like they take place in a medieval setting. Directing and pacing are not particularly good, as they feel sloppy to the most part. Although most of the jokes are ok, they are presented in a slow and dull way that takes away most of the impact they have. They are also trying to stretch a scene to last as much as possible and even repeat the same jokes three times in a row, so things become repetitive and boring fast. CAST The characters are nothing much to talk or remember for, as they all have a very simple personality that can be described in two lines with an added quirk in their personality to make a running joke out of. As it usually happens with one-note characters, that gets old rather fast and you stop caring. PRODUCTION VALUES It a low on budget production so many things look and feel crude. There is not much of a detail given to character designs or background decoration, and even the explosions look like nothing more than dull fireworks. Many motions feel stiff and slow, while the fighting scenes are short and simple, usually resolved in convenient ways when the episode is running out of time. The only aspects that I sort of liked were voice acting and soundtrack, which are dynamic and lively despite the mishaps in the budget. LEGACY In all, it is a mediocre time waster. Some of the jokes in it are quite good but there is simply not enough passion in it to make it feel interesting for more than a few episodes. You just end up not laughing or caring out of lack of creativity or unpredictability. If you want to blame someone, point at Capcom for giving up on trying to make good games.
