Comic books with nudity

The first installment of this story, which , covered Wertham’s hit list of comic books dealing with subjects such as subliminal nudity, women’s “headlights,” and the fascism and homosexuality of DC superheroes; today we conclude with depictions of death, drugs and eyeball damage.

Finally the other day when, after the busy whirlwind of work and WonderCon had died down, I found myself on a long boring bus ride. With deep anticipation, I pulled out the three comic books that I’d been saving; Hellblazer, Neonomicon and Fables. Admittedly these aren’tdies comic books, but they also aren’t usually that visually graphic. Sure, the stories can be explicit, but usually the art is relatively demure. While I realize that they’re recommended for mature readers, I really didn’t think that there would be anything too scandalous for my fellow bus riders to read over my shoulder.

The first issue in the Batman: Damned series (2018–1019), which appeared in the company’s adult-oriented DC Black Label imprint, shocked readers with its full-frontal nudity. The Caped Crusader appears from the waist down, his nakedness apparent but with details hidden by a dark shadow falling across him in one panel. The only hint of his penis is a few lines, visible despite the shadow, which outline a part of the organ. Based on the feedback the company received from the comic book hero’s fans, DC’s powers-that-be concluded that nudity is not appropriate, even for their mature line of comics.

Comic books are filled with depraved heroes and villains of all kinds who are just looking to get a little action when they can. Sometimes we see superheroes getting it on with one another, other times it’s simply normal people doing what they usually do to have a little fun. Comic books can be voyeuristic like that, especially the independent titles from the likes of Image Comics. Those books show us pretty much everything! We’ve come a long way since the Comics Code Authority reigned supreme over the industry. Comic book characters and their creators can now let their freak flags fly.
