While the second part of the anime to complete the 24-episode title is due to be released later in 2022, these initial episodes leave very little to the imagination and will likely appeal to fans of the original late ’80s manga or early ’90s OVA series. From Kite and Ninja Scroll to Gunsmith Cats, foreign audiences were treated to all the sex and carnage they could ask for. Bastard!! was no exception — a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy creation whose author, Hagiwara Kazushi, channeled his enthusiasm and heavy metal music wholeheartedly into his work.

If 2022’s adaptation of Bastard!! has any saving grace, it’s that it is very self-aware. The anime is not overly self-serious — in fact, a lot of its more ‘adult’ content is played for laughs, inviting the viewer to nod along and knowingly smile rather than be stunned or upset by its on-screen depictions of over-the-top shed or in-your-face nudity, the latter of which stops just short of outright pornography in certain episodes. In other words, regardless of its graphic nature, the content is presented as something more or less all in good fun, if not in good taste.

Given its history, target audience and overall tone and themes, Bastard!! can be said to be very much a product of its time. It’s the kind of series that intentionally presents itself as dark and gritty while displaying a lot of that darker content in a comedic manner, from the way people or monsters obliterate their foes in a hail of and guts to its portrayal of completely pointless sexualized “.” Designed as it is to appeal to s looking for something and older viewers longing for the “good old days” of ultra-sexual, ultra-violent anime OVAs, absolutely none of this is surprising.
