Nanachi was born in the far north region of Sereni, lost their family and home at a young age, and was taken to the Abyss by the infamous

Bondrewd was experimenting with ways to negate the curse of the Abyss, using children as his test subjects. While in the Abyss, Nanachi meets Mitty, another child taken by Bondrewd, and the two became close friends. Eventually, the number of children decreased, until finally Mitty was chosen to be experimented on and was led out by Bondrewd. Worried for Mitty, Nanachi followed, and soon found her trapped in one of two connected capsules.

Reg, though conflicted, follows Nanachi’s wish and comforts them afterward as they break down in tears due to setting Mitty free, but also losing her. After Riko recovered, Nanachi decides to join Riko and Reg on their journey to the bottom of the Abyss.

Continuing their perilous descent down the Abyss, Riko, Regu, and newfound friend Nanachi reach the Abyss' fifth layer, The Sea of Corpses. Upon arriving at the research station known as Idofront, the main trio encounter the mysterious Prushka, the alleged daughter of Bondrewd, who leads them to the White Whistle responsible for Nanachi's dark past. Despite the welcoming appearances of Idofront's residents, Nanachi warns the young adventurers that things are not always what they seem. With the only route to the sixth layer shrouded in mystery and Bonedrewd's schemes awaiting them, what sacrifices must be made in order to continue the journey down to the bottom of the Abyss?

A unique dark-fantasy sci-fi anime, Made in Abyss, is set in a fictional world in the town of Orth. In the middle of the town, a giant hole exists descending deep into the earth and is called the \”Abyss.\” The Abyss contains several artifacts and equipment of past civilizations and is a hunting spot for people known as \”Cave Raiders.\”

Cave Raiders undertake dangerous tasks, where they descend into the mist-filled Abyss to find relics. While going into the Abyss is a fairly easy task, coming out is a challenge because of what is known as \”the Curse of the Abyss.\” The deeper one goes into the hole, the higher the curse’s effects!

The series follows the character of an orphan called Riko, whose mother was presumed dead after taking a \”last descent\” into the Abyss. When Riko meets a humanoid robot, Reg, she decides to make her descent into the Abyss to find her mother. Eventually, the raiders make a few discoveries where they can find things belonging to Riko’s mother, Lyza.
