Let’s get a couple of things out of the way first (I’ll be putting this at the top of each review of this show, so get used to it):

To run down the events as quickly as possible, our protagonist Keyaru is living his tortured life for a second time through, enduring all the ills previously perpetrated against him with the added benefit of knowledge, powerful magic and an all-encompassing desire for revenge. He endures 6 months of physical and mental abuse, being drugged, beaten and raped day-after-day. After concocting a master escape plan he confronts his main aggressor Princess Flare, tortures her, rapes her and then finally mind-controls her into being his obedient slave. It’s undoubtedly pretty heavy stuff to say the least.

Now to say this anime is misogynistic, problematic and insensitive is kind of like going to a waterpark and being surprised there’s so much water. Of course it is, the protagonist is a 14 year-old boy! To expect the fragile ego and budding libido of that particular demographic to respond to dehumanising abuse and lack of all control with anything other than exacting the same, or even

I’ve used the term “ecchi-adjacent” to describe shows with lots of fan-service that are otherwise not ecchi, recent shows like ‘Dropout Idol Fruit Tart’ and ‘~IWAKERU~ Sports Climbing Girls’ fall into that category. And so I dub ‘Redo of Healer’ to be “hentai-adjacent” because it absolutely

All that aside, what did I personally think of the episode? Well as far as telling the story of a 14 year-old boy’s rape/revenge fantasy, it was confronting, unexpected and at times uncomfortable. It also felt over-the-top, immature and simplistic too and yet that’s kind of a part of the appeal? So from a strictly content based standpoint this was kind of eye-opening, ‘Interspecies Reviewers’ unabashed approach to sex in “mainstream” anime laid the groundwork for this (and hopefully more) anime with sex-central themes and imagery. I saw things in this episode I never thought I’d see outside of a hentai and for that I must commend it for pushing the boundaries in the medium. I don’t really like any of the characters and yet that’s no barrier for me enjoying the severity of the content as long as I don’t think too hard about it. Indeed ‘Redo of Healer’ is showing itself to be a different kind of “horror movie” and it’s all the more refreshing for it.

Pretending to be afraid of absorbing painful memories, Keyaru swears never to heal again and pretends to allow Flare to imprison and get him addict to drugs, even allowing himself to be raped to further fool her. Flare begins forcing Keyaru to heal injured heroes, but Keyaru secretly steals magical abilities from them. Keyaru uses his stolen abilities to escape and disguise himself as Leonard, Flare’s Imperial Commander, and, once alone with Flare, heals away her ability to use magic, rendering her defenseless. After repeatedly breaking then healing her fingers, Keyaru rapes Flare before he heals her in order to alter her appearance and memories. After healing a dead bodyguard’s face to look like Flare, Keyaru frames Leonard before he escapes with the real Flare. Keyaru decides to target his other abusers, Bullet and Blade, before seeking out the Demon Lord he previously defeated to find out what she had been trying to protect when she died. With Flare now an amnesiac, Keyaru renames her Freia, convinces her she is his servant and lover while he changes his face and takes the hero name Keyarga the Healer, leaving his weak name Keyaru behind.

The story centers around Keyaru, a healer by profession, who is exploited repeatedly by others due to being a healing magician, notices what lays beyond just his healing magic, and is convinced that a healing magician is the strongest class in the world. However, by the time he realizes his own potential, he is already deprived of everything. Thus, he uses healing magic on the world itself to go back four years into the past, deciding to redo everything and get revenge on the ones who exploited him.
