This week’s episode was frankly fantastic. It ranks up there with Mushishi’s best episodes. What really sold it for me was the way Toki’s symptoms from the mushi were used as a perfect metaphor for his own grief and sadness. Devastated by the tragic loss of his sister, the focus of this week’s story cut his heart off from others, isolating himself from those who love him. In some respects this episode had many similarities with last weeks. They both focused on how the loss of a loved one can ruin a person, and how the only the only way to overcome this grief is to open yourself up to others.

This is a perfectly understandable reaction, after all if losing someone that you truly love hurts, not having any loved ones means you won’t ever feel such pain again. Of course this isn’t how humans should live, we are fundamentally social creatures that crave relationships with others, and it’s clear that he’d never be happy if he stayed as he was.
