On the official site for the new animated film directed by Mamoru Hosoda (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, Summer Wars, Bakemono no Ko, Mirai no Mirai) and produced by Studio Chizu, Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (The Dragon and Freckled Princess, or also Belle), a new promotional image of the project was published.
Our protagonist, Suzu, is a 17-year-old high school student, who lives in the countryside of Kochi Prefecture with her father, after losing her mother at a young age. She loved to sing with her mother more than anything else, but as a result of her death she is no longer able to sing. It wasn’t long before she and her father grew increasingly distant from each other, and Suzu closed her heart to the rest of the world.
When Suzu felt that writing music was the only remaining purpose in her life, she discovers the huge online space known as “U”, where she takes on the personality of her, Belle. Another me, another reality, we are no longer limited to one world. Suzu quickly realizes that when she’s inside “U” as her avatar, Belle, she can sing quite naturally. As she continues to showcase her own music in the virtual world, she quickly becomes the rising star of “U”. However, that surprise is short-lived. Suddenly, a mysterious dragon-shaped creature appears before her.

EDIT: Whoa this post blew up in the past week again! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who's disappointed with this movie lol. It had potential but my conclusion is that it was poorly written. Thank you all for your posts and answers! I am happy to have this space for discussions, and to see that we are many that want to talk about it. Keep writing! It is interesting to read all of the different approaches, thanks!
Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel like I SHOULD be giving it 4-5 stars but as article stated, there's just too much story going on.
