The anime first starts off with a lone survivor running from nearly five other players in the game of Btooom. It appears this minor character has a phobia of smoke which our main character, Ryouta, uses against him. The “Survival” genre is nothing new, with both Japanese and Western media franchises popping up left, right and center to take advantage of what has proven to be successful in the market. While BTOOOM! may be too dark for some, and for once I think does warrant the MA15+ classification given to it in Australia, it is these darker and edgier moments that sets this series apart from others. Some of the characters have tragic backstories, some are anti-social and some are driven to insanity on the island – with each character Sakamoto facing off against providing something unique from the others.
Armed with a bag full of unique bombs known as “BIM”, the players are tasked with killing seven of their fellow participants and taking their green crystals in order to return home. Initially condemning any form of violence, Ryouta is forced to fight when he realizes that many of the other players are not as welcoming as they may seem. Teaming up with Himiko, a fellow Btooom! player, they attempt to get off of the island together, coming closer and closer to the truth behind this contest of death.
