That seems a bit…irresponsible. How much power do Hunters have? This just seems like negligence. Especially if they're OK with people like Hisoka joining.

It definitely illustrates that Hunters aren't just "good guys".

Something was added in the '99 version, Hisoka said he was going to be a Blacklist Hunter (literally bounty hunter) and said these type can put excuses of being ordered/hired to do so.

Hunters are pretty much just "Are you badass, and do you want to do something? Okay, you can be a hunter if you can pass the exam"

Honestly, Leorio doesn't really seem physically capable to even be in the Hunters exam to begin with. So far he's been coasting by largely by thanks to his friends. It should be interesting to see how he developers combat and survival skills since he seems to be starting from zero compared to the other 3 major characters. Knowing the author's history with goofy characters, I'm sure there will be a payoff eventually.

How much power do Hunters have?

For the most part, this episode went as I had expected it to, though I'll be damned if the way that this episode ended wasn't one of the most heartwarming moments I've found in this anime so far. It was just one of those interactions that's meant to give you those warm, fuzzy feelings, and I feel that moment alone managed to really enhance what would have otherwise been an already good sort of interlude episode.

However, Gon is never one to take something quietly, so he decides to rummage through Bourbon's dead body to find some anti-venom, though he somehow only gets roughed up in the process. Gon passes the anti-venom off to Kurapika, and decides to make a trade with Ponzu: he'll trade Bourbon's badge for her canister of sleeping gas. He plans to carry everyone out while holding his breath while the snakes are unconscious. Ponzu points out how that's such a stupid plan until Gon points out that he can somehow hold his breath for almost 10 minutes. I felt like this was bullshit, so I decided to search around online for records in breath holding, and apparently, a professional free diver in Spain currently holds the record at 24 minutes and 3 seconds. Wouldn't you know it? Truth is certainly stranger than fiction sometimes.

So one dosage of sleeping gas and a good night's rest later, the group makes their way to the landing area, where 6 other participants have lined up for the final phase. All in all, this means we've gone from the 405 applicants that originally intended to become Hunters down to only 9. On top of that, those numbers aren't even considering the likely thousands of others that didn't even make it past the pre-exam. When you put it to those figures, it really gives you a sense for just how powerful, resourceful, and generally talented you have to be to become a Hunter.
