While the streaming numbers are often reported after a month’s delay, by arrangement with streaming providers, Nielsen took an additional few days to release this week’s chart. The company usually releases the chart every Thursday and did not offer an explanation for the delay. The streaming tracker counts only viewership via a TV screen, meaning mobile is not in the mix, and figures are only for the U.S. and only for Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video and Apple TV+. (HBO Max, Paramount+ and Peacock are among the broad-audience services without regular Nielsen numbers.)

Rawson Marshall Thurber crafted the Red Notice script from action-adventure elements that were long out of date. In the film, there is a mention of Nazis selling antiques, exotic countries with hidden treasures also appear there, and even a Russian prison located on the top of a snow-covered cliff.

Everything about Red Notice looks ridiculously good, starting with the cast. [Ryan] Reynolds, [Dwayne] Johnson and [Gal] Gadot are more than actors in this film. They are Movie Stars, polished to perfection and guided through a delightfully twisty and ridiculously fun treasure hunt that calls to mind the best elements of National Treasure, Jungle Cruise, and yes, the Indiana Jones franchise. Hallowed ground, without question, but Red Notice earns the right to stick its pin in the vicinity of Raiders of the Lost Ark on the massive map of Hollywood classics.

“This is an important step forward for Netflix, the creators we work with and our members,” Pablo Perez De Rosso, a vice president for content strategy at Netflix, wrote in a blog post Tuesday. “People want to understand what success means in a streaming world, and these lists offer the clearest answer to that question in our industry.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Here’s a look at what’s arriving in movie theaters, on TV and streaming services this week, including the Netflix action-comedy ‘Red Notice,’ a revival of ‘Dexter’ and ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ on Paramount+.

Can a movie be a blockbuster on Netflix? That’s what “Red Notice,” available at home on Friday, hopes to accomplish. The comedy-action film has a big screen budget of over $160 million and three major movie stars in Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. It’s the kind of billing where you almost don’t need to know what it’s about (a globe-trotting treasure hunt, international criminals and Johnson as an FBI agent) or what the critics are saying (not a lot of good so far). To be fair, this started out as a Universal film, but like last week’s Apple TV+ Tom Hanks offering “Finch,” it was sold to the streamer in the first summer of the pandemic.
