Uruwashi Maria, a student at the Hananomiya private academy is a strong-willed and selfish "Villainess". Her life is on easy mode and she has no enemies, but one day the memories of her past life come to her. Suddenly she remembers that in her previous life she was a normal high school girl. And she’s seen this life of hers play out before in a manga she read in her previous life! According to memories of her past life, Maria is killed by somebody in the manga. "And I don’t know who did it because I died before I could read the ending!" Can Maria avoid her death and find happiness?
I recalled memories of my past life after Grandfather told me my engagement was annulled. At the same time, I realized this world was the same world as in my favorite shoujo manga. The villainess who exhausted every method possible to bully the heroine… I reincarnated as that villainess’ chubby follower. I shook upon remembering the future lined up for her. When the villainess’ evil deeds came to light, she pinned all her crimes on Britney. I was a character that gets executed. To reliably avoid this, I must not become the villainess’ follower. As this villainess only keeps those who are exceptionally uglier than her by her side, I may be able to do something if I slim up. For now, let’s go on a diet!
I’m sure alot of you probably already know the premise behind this story, but I’ll still sum it up briefly for those unfamiliar. Bokumachi starts out with our main character Satoru Fujinuma who is a mid 20′s man living on his own, working at a pizza restaurant, while perusing his dream of writing manga. He is a fairly deadpan and borderline emotionless person, but he cares deeply for people around him. This is partially due to a phenomenon that occurs to him periodically that he has dubbed “Revival”. Every now and then, he will experience Deja Vu and that signals to him to look around and see what is out of place. By having this happen to him a few times in his life, he has prevented several possibly tragic events from occurring.
With all that being said, I think going any deeper into detail or into the story would really ruin the fun for anyone reading. One of the things Bokumachi does so well is throwing you for a loop and subverting your expectations about what is unraveling around the characters. It does an even better job with keeping things grounded in a sense of realism, despite the time traveling aspect. The author paid very close attention to how real crime investigation takes place and how calculated murders can be so easily pinned on other people with ties to the victim.
Now, I know most people at this point have probably watched the anime, this is where I’d like to talk for a bit about the show and the manga. While I honestly think the show does a great job of sticking to the manga and staying as true as possible given time constraints to the story, the manga ends up pulling ahead in the end simply for a few events. The main one being the ending. While I can’t go into detail about this for obvious spoiling reasons, the manga and anime endings wind up in the same place, but the way in which they get there are like night and day. The manga spends more time on the final conflict and overall is EXTREMELY satisfying when it resolves. The other thing in the anime that bothered me was the downplay of Airi in the second half of the show. In the manga she plays a much more vital role in both Satoru’s life and in his memories. With that said, the anime is still very solid, but if you liked it, you would probably like the manga even more.
Bokumachi is honestly a gem of a manga for being a mystery series that misleads you and shocks you with the true villain, something that hardly happens in mystery series. The author put genuine time and effort into crafting a setting that naturally breeds suspicion, and it makes for a great read. There are a few issues at times with pacing, but that’s negligible compared to the good. If you want a mystery and a borderline romance, read this. Hell, they even manage to make you laugh on plenty of occasions, too.
So please go out and give Bokumachi a read! If anything, you could always watch the anime first to give yourself a taste of the series, but I highly recommend reading this, there aren’t enough good mystery series’ out there anymore. Thanks for reading again this week and please share and spread this around! Give these manga some love and new readers!
