So I just realized that there was an actual chapter before this one. Either way the last chapter and this chapter go so well together that they can be grouped into one chapter. Interesting fact is that the number of the chapter is 666, the devils number, any how lets get on with this very confusing events happening so far.

Clown remembers when Law first came to the island. He and Law were talking indoors, and Law said that he wanted to stay on the island since it could not be caught by a Log Pose. It also remains of government research that he seemed to be interested in. All he asked for was free roam of the island, and that neither of them ask the other too personal questions. Law also made it very clear that no one was to know that he is on the island, not even Caesar Clown’s employer: ”Joker”. Clown says that he sees no harm in trusting Law, and asks Monet if she agrees. She looks up from copying notes about Law and asks if he could heal the prisoners on the island who were paralyzed by the poisonous gas, ending the flashback. Clown tells Law that if he calls the kids back he will do even better and he doubts someone who sucked up to the government in order to become a Shichibukai would make things too difficult for them. Clown turns to leave, but Law asks what he meant by the kids coming back. Clown explains about the drugged candy, holding up a piece to show Law. Law comments that Clown’s nastiness reminds him of someone else. Monet asks about a fight as Law turns to leave. Law tells them to call him if they need anything. Clown comments that people who think too much can be difficult.

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece.

The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next King of the Pirates.

We’re restarting weekly One Piece chapter reviews! To refresh your memories, Luffy and the gang are at their first stop in the New World, Punk Hazard. The Straw Hats are separated into two groups, but the island is also playing host to the G-5 Marines, led by Smoker and Tashigi; a mysteriously moody Trafalgar Law; and a brand new villain, Caesar Clown.

The action’s starting to kick into full gear in this chapter and the casualties are piling up. Whether or not the Straw Hats are alive isn’t much of a concern (unless Oda randomly decides to channel Joss Whedon), but Caesar Clown’s betrayal of Brown Beard was a saddening turn of events. This plus the drug candy is shifting the tone of this arc to become gradually more somber, which is an aspect of One Piece that I’ve always appreciated. The candy debacle also gives Chopper a personal motivation for wanting to take down Caesar Clown. The individual attention to detail and character is something Oda really excels at and it makes the battles so much more than just cool fight scenes.
