Ep 1 is standalone, while most of all other episodes are part of an arc (and arcs get increasingly longer as you go along).

I think Ep 1 does a relatively good job of introducing the protag, Luffy. He’s one of those charas who, while he DOES develop in the sense of getting stronger, gaining experiences, and learning some harsh lessons, who he is and his core beliefs/personality never waver. How he acts in Ep 900 isn’t really all that different from Ep 1.

I think Ep 1 also is a pretty decent (if tiny) example of OP story-telling in general. The mix of light-heartedness and action, Lu being both an idiot and weirdly insightful/supportive when he needs to be, Lu’s rubber man powers in action. Pirates vs Pirates vs Marines. For one ep, I think it does pretty ok, although this certainly isn’t all there is to OP ^ ^;

(Ep 1 also introduces Coby, someone who looks like he’s a throwaway minor arc chara, but who comes back many times and gets some ridiculous growth).

＊Note, just remember this episode aired in 1999, so don’t expect the same animation level as current anime ^ ^;;;

Alright, thought Ep 1 was okay and curious enough to try a bit more, but not quite interested in committing to an entire anime season yet? THAT’S OKAY!

One Piece has a series of TV Specials/Movies all titled “Episode of” something or another. These are official digest versions of entire arcs/storylines, all hyper condensed into one movie-ish length, and with better quality animation.

The manga is MUCH faster than the anime, both bc it’s manga, and bc it doesn’t really have any unnecessary content. While I love (and honestly prefer in many ways) the anime, it does have the problem of purposefully elongating certain eps to stall catching up on the manga, and it can DRAG in certain arcs.
