The world in question consists of a number of kingdoms which subscribe to a Metacritic-like ranking system. Each kingdom’s ‘rank’ is determined by how prosperous the nation is, the strength of its armies, and how badass their king is.

The story follows Bojji, the son of a mighty king in a world where it’s expected for kings to be fearsome warriors who fight on the front lines. Unfortunately for him, despite being the first born son and thus heir to the throne, everyone expects and wants his half brother Daida to become king because Bojji is physically weak and deaf.

The official Twitter account for “Ousama Ranking” (King Ranking) has unveiled a new trailer for the anime, featuring the show’s opening theme “BOY” performed by King Gnu. The anime was previously announced for October 2021, and WIT Studio is in charge of the production. You can check out the new trailer on the

Though, how exactly the series frames those perils and Bojji’s quest for recognition is going to largely determine how this show shakes out. The topic of disability representation is a thorny and complex one, and while there’s no singular “right” way to go about it, there are certainly a lot of tired and alienating ways to do it. So far though, I like how Bojji’s been presented. It’s clear that his being Deaf is part of his life, but only defines so much of his reputation because the people around him can’t imagine a nonverbal child to be anything but clueless and unintelligent. The adults in his life treat him with either contempt or pity, but few of them have realized Bojji’s ability to read lips, seemingly because they think such a feat beyond him. In the same way, the spry and observant boy turns out to be an excellent evasive fighter, ending the episode almost effortlessly out-sparring his stronger, more aggressive brother. This seems like it could tie in to the titular “ranking” of kings, as Bojji’s existence and position challenge his kingdom’s definition of kingly strength, and that’s an incredibly rich vein to tap.

After the OP plays, we properly meet the protagonist Bojji. The young boy is deaf and can’t properly speak, which makes his path to becoming a great king like his father a lot harder. He meets a shadow (Kage), which can somehow understand him. They are able to communicate, which makes Bojji extremely happy and willing to do whatever Kage asks of him. This causes for some bittersweet moments, but we can guess the two will get closer as the anime goes on.

Episode 1 was impressive, and it shows a lot of promise for the anime. We saw that Bojji himself wants to become the greatest king despite his circumstances, which is what he told Kage. We saw Daida’s swordmaster BeBin control snakes much like the ones that attacked Bojji at some point in the past. Then we have his mysterious ability to dodge (and fight?). There’s 6 kings ranked higher than Bosse, and the road to becoming the best certainly won’t be easy. The anime is listed for 23 episodes, so let’s see how far our precious prince goes in that time!
