Japanese sales comparator Oricon has released its annual top-selling manga ranking for 2021, revealing that Gege Akutami’s story of wizards and curses has just passed Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Koyoharu Gotouge’s Kimetsu No Yaiba. Jujutsu Kaisen has sold over 30 million copies in Japan this year, while Demon Slayer made 29.5 million in its final year of serial release. While Demon Slayer didn’t grab the top spot, its 23rd and final volume was the best-selling manga volume in the region for the year, with over five million copies sold. It should be noted that the Oricon sales ranking only considers physical sales and not the revenue generated from digital manga sales.

Either way, Jujutsu Kaisen continues to be a certified success. The manga recently announced that it will surpass 60 million copies in circulation by the end of December, beating the lifetime release numbers of older series such as My Hero Academia, Berserk, Haikyuu !! and Inuyasha. Akutami’s popular manga series only launched in 2018 and shows no signs of ending anytime soon. Sales of the series were boosted this year with the premiere of the well-received animated adaptation of MAPPA. The series will also soon see the premiere of its first theatrical release, the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0. If the franchise manages to maintain that momentum, it is well on its way to becoming only the 19th manga series in history to surpass a print run. 100 million copies, joining classics like One Piece, Golgo 13, Dragon Ball, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Naruto.
