ANIME DVD~ENGLISH DUBBED~Yuri!!! On Ice(1-12End)En
This is one of my top three favorite Japanese animations. It’s the series I show people who I’m introducing to anime, with the warning that there’s romantic chemistry between two males, even though there are absolutely no sexual shenanigans going on, just a sweet little kiss. Anyway, all the characters are distinct from and complement each other very well. Perhaps my favorite character is Yurio, a cute little blonde skater who is grumpy and angry pretty much all the time, but he adds a nice edge to the show. The first four episodes are my favorite, where the development of the characters relationships happen, and then the later eps seem devoted mainly to the skating. I am stunned by the beauty and elegance of some of the performances, but some of the eps get weighed down in all the skating performances by different characters that I don’t really care about. I do hoot and holler though and yell at the screen when skating mistakes are made or when it’s done perfectly, especially by Yuri. I’m always rooting for Yuri to win. It had me at the edge of my seat. A fun anime that draws you in and creates a world to get lost in. I highly recommend it.
Could not have asked for better, more timely service or a product described to perfection.
First up, we have our main character, Yuri. Yuri is voiced by Josh Grelle, who has played Armin in Attack on Titan, Sadao/Satan in The Devil is a Part-timer, and Nitori in Free!. This voice actor really puts his all into this character, which is why I do think that his portrayal of Yuri is what help makes this dub so good. He is able to perfectly get the voice of a awkward teenage boy in a mid-life crisis, while still making Yuri a very appealing character.
Next up we have everyone’s favorite Russian(possibly gay for Yuri) skater, Victor. He is played by Jerry Jewel, who has played Isogai in Assassination Classroom, Lau in Black Butler, and Russia in Hetalia(ironic isn’t it). Something I will give huge praise for, in this dub, is the Russian accents, with Victor’s being a good example. I really like the voice they gave him, as it definitely fits his personality and makes him the fun, silly character that we saw from the sub. I do still prefer the sub voice, but that is mostly because of my love for Junichi Suwabe. Otherwise, it is a perfect casting choice and a beautiful performance.
Lastly, for our main characters, we have Yurio. He is voiced by Micah Solusod, who has played Yukine in Noragami and Tsubaki in Servamp. Now what I was saying before about Russian accents definitely applies here. Yurio’s accent in not only believable, but fits the character perfectly and sounds amazing. I honestly can’t say anything about this performance, because it was just so perfect. Micah Solusod definitely has the best Russian accent in the show.
Now normally I would have other sections for how I felt about other performances, but I actually like all the voices used in the dub, so far, and I would probably put them all in a perfect, or good, category. Besides, if I listed off every character, we would be here all day. I will give praise to Colleen Clinkenbeard’s performance for Minako though, as it really sounds like she is having a lot of fun with the role. Now on to the positives:
I highly recommend this dub, whether you are watching this show now, or not. This is definitely a good dub for all those dub lovers out there and, I feel that, my words can’t give this dub enough credit for how good it truly is. If you are a fan of this show, please go check out the dub. As of this post, the first 3 episodes have been dubbed and are available on Funimation’s site, although I do believe you have to be a subscriber to watch them. Anyway, please comment below on what you thought of the dub? If you haven’t watched it, will you watch it after reading my review? What changes, if any, do you think they should do? I will probably update this weekly as new characters appear, along with Nanbaka, although I will mainly be doing the skaters and main characters, although I will include an honorable mention for other voice actors if there voices really create an impact on me. I will also review this dub, overall, when the show is done. So, keep on making history and I hope to see you guys next time!
So I don’t know if you were just super nice because you are a huge Funimation fan. But speaking objectively (as someone who speaks Russian and immersed themselves in the culture for years while learning it), the voice acting for the Russian characters is bad. The voice actor that played Victor sounds Italian half the time, and many of the accents on words are not where they would be for a Russian speaker.
Well, I’m not Russian so I guess you have me beat there. I just consider them good considering the voice actors aren’t Russian, and the voices fit the characters personality. But I respect your opinion.
