Sentai Filmworks acquired the license for Mushibugyo’s OVA.

Mushibugyo is written and illustrated by Hiroshi Fukuda.

Mushibugyo takes place in an alternate version of Edo Japan.

The series, called Joju Senjin Mushibugyo, is a retelling of the original series.

The action story is set in Edo-era Tokyo in the early 1700s. The eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune ordered boxes to be installed so commoners can submit their thoughts. After hearing their voices, the shogun creates a new magistrate unit — Mushibugyou — to protect the people in the heart of the city. Each member is a specialist with unique fighting skills. Many people (myself included) largely dismissed this series at first glance. It looked like a standard shounen fighting show: boy fights monsters, gains powers, makes friends. The only difference being, of course, that the opponents are even dumber than usual. This first impression was largely correct: Mushibugyo is a shounen fighting show to its core, complete even with the yelling out of attack names.
