How did we get here? How did things get so complicated? Wasn’t this supposed to be a fun pirate show?

Take your mind back to when you first heard about this anime. Maybe you thought, “We haven’t had a new pirate anime in a while. this will be interesting”. Maybe you were intrigued by the concept or drawn in by the big-name studio and Crunchyroll involved with the likes of Adult Swim and Toonami. Whatever you thought of the show then or even after watching 4-5 episodes of it, I can guarantee you that the show didn’t turn out like you hoped it would.

The “Big Twist” at the end of the previous episode was that Cody and Fena’s father/caretaker were the same being. Production IG really tried to make this moment shocking and grandiose, except for the fact that nobody cared about Cody or Fena’s somehow still alive father. As if that wasn’t enough,

More pirates watched this show illegally than were featured on the show. The show is called “Fena: Pirate Princess” in English. Since there are no pirates, and the princess part doesn’t even hold any significance other than 10 seconds in

The worst part about the show ending like this is that by the end, nothing mattered. The show gave us a montage of all the previous characters coming back expecting us to feel something, but most of them missed their mark because all they did was remind me what this show used to be and why I held all those expectations. What started as a happy go lucky journey to find the origins of a stone turned into a question about the earth’s existence and how Fena held the world’s future in her hands.

Fena, Yukimaru, Shitan, and Abel were the only ones who were ever given any time, and even still, two of them were cast aside by the show at the end. It became a Fena-Yukimaru show by the end, which would have still been fine if the show didn’t parade them around everyone else as if that wasn’t the case. No one ever mattered but them, no one received any development but them, and most characters will be forgotten by the end of next week.
