“This episode made me angry, it made me feel disgusted, it gave me a boner, it made my heart race, but ultimately, I just feel miserable.” … “Kuzu no Honkai has got a high chance of becoming my AOTS.”
I can see why people don’t like Kuzu. It really boils down to understanding what romance is, or rather what it contains. Romance for the most isn’t all about kissing / snogging / or even sex (well for men it is). It’s about understanding how your “potential” significant other is. How they feel and what you both want in a relationship. Kuzu deals with that, unlike everyother rom-shows. Where all they pander to is holding hands and blushing endlessly whilst not really pushing the romance forward. In other words being superficial. Unrequited love is a tough one. How do you deal with the prospect of being rejected. Believe me, having feelings for someone who does not reciprocate them back is pretty tough. Most aren’t lucky like Hanabi. And some rare ones like Mugi – they get something out of it.
I agree that the show contains those things, but at this point I don’t think that really matters. It hardly goes anywhere with them, the only people whose romance has progressed to a significant degree are Akane and Kanai (hence why they should be the main characters). Speaking as someone who went through his own high school story of unrequited love I can appreciate Hanabi’s story, but the show as a whole doesn’t seem to have a story. At least not one that’s going anywhere anytime soon. I think Kuzu no Honkai has what it needs to be a great romance, but again it doesn’t seem to be making much progress, it doesn’t feel like it’s using what it has to make a narrative at all, let alone one I’m really into.

Kuzu No Honkai 2017 E01, A girl who feel no hope with her boyfriend, and she always want to love with another mans, and dream of them. Her boyfriend realized that she is differrents from whom he love.
For those however, who are willing to invest the time and are not scared of emotional bruises, this show is a total treat. The direction and technical execution is fantastic, the soundtrack exceptional, the art very nice and the storytelling exemplary. Romance drama is usually a string of corny, cliche-ridden scenes which follows a predictable path. Kuzu no Honkai is anything but. Once the introduction of all characters is completed around episode 6, I daresay that no single unspoiled viewer would be able to predict how the show was going to end.
So, if you are primarily looking for a story with typical characters going through the romance/drama motions in the typical drama arc hoping for the typical happy ending, Kuzu no Honkai does not only not deliver, it betrays these expectations. If on the other hand you want to see a character study of various forms of unrequited love, what people think, and why they do what they do, as ugly as it may be, this show will be a fantastic experience. Very instructive, very touching at times, and extremely unusual.
Definitely agreed with you on personal experience Mentar, I think to get the most out of this you need that, or at least good knowledge. Kuzu’s premise in a sense requires empathy to get the most out of it. For example unless one has come across an Akane before, it can be difficult understanding where she comes from and what she wants, let alone why. Without that experience, the intricacies of her character are lost, and from there the importance of Narumi and his actions.
I liked Kuzu no Honkai a lot. Hanabi developed into such an amazing character, and even though I wanted her to find happiness the ending still gives hope to her even though her and Mugi decided to go their separate ways. As soon as Mugi confessed he will never forget Akane I knew he and Hanabi wouldn’t be together. If he chose Hanabi straight after that it almost seems like he is using her again for comfort and Hanabi deserves better than that.
And no, I don’t think the show agrees with Mugi that Akane is full of self-worth, but it is a conclusion I’d expect a character like her to come to. Kuzu No Honkai is extremely cynical at its core, it laughs at its characters and wants to destroy their lives. There’s no compassion here, and I can see the author just writing this to provoke the audience as much as possible instead of meaningfully exploring the relationships, but I guess that would require a much stronger writing.
