Writing light novels isn’t all that easy, especially when you’re in high school…and you have to do the cooking and the chores for your shut-in stepsister who’s hardly come out of her room the past year! In the light novel business, it’s crucial to have the right person illustrating your books to help them sell–and maybe get made into manga and anime! But in a world of online pen names, the author and the illustrator may still not even know each other…until one day they realize they’ve been living in the same house all along!

Why did I even watch this? One thing I can say for sure this anime taught me a lot about one word „ichaicha“. It means “make out” i.e. kissing, touching, etc. It’s been while since I watched some crappy harem anime series. As it is usual for any harem that does not fall into hentai category, there is no real action happening. What you get instead is bunch of girls, mostly crazy i.e. resulting in a lot of comical moments, to compete over generic onii-chan. The premise of story is quite simple. I’m just talking about it so you would get the picture, what the story is like. We have the onii-chan, who wants to become light novel author. However he is beaten by his all-perfect little sister aka imouto in contest for publishing. He has no idea that her work is not just mere fiction but embodiment of her lust for onii-chan, thus “the story of little sister, who is troubled by her passionate love of her big brother” is born. She ask him to pretend he is the author. This leads to situation, where the onii-chan is pursued by other women, like his classmate, who is also writer of light novels, or “ahegao double peace” artist, etc. This forces tsundere little sister to become more proactive and bold in her advances. Onii-chan on the other hand will have to awake his love for the little sister … the end. Animation is simple and generic as far as it can be. Opening theme is good, but rest is ok. So, it’s so bad that it can be funny at some moments, maybe. Would I recommend it, hell no. Unless you have a lot of time and no shame stay clear of this. Watch something good or even average instead.

This was quite an unexceptional anime.  The most egregious issue is of course the animation…the only good thing I can say about it is that I generally found the character designs to be palatable.  Apart from that though, there really isn’t anything good to say.  Aside from generally terrible movement, the worst thing was that they added in shots where the angle gets flipped 90 degrees.  I couldn’t even begin to guess what the reason for this was aside from either laziness or stupidity.  But it was very distracting. I’ll preface this next part by saying that imouto anime isn’t really my go to genre, but I’ll try not to let my personal tastes reflect on my review of the story too much.  In general though I thought it was entertaining enough to at least hold my attention.  And while I don’t have much interest in imouto’s, I do appreciate moe anime.  And this is definitely that. Some of the situations and characters are a bit too on the nose with their tropeness though, and I found there to be too many members of the "harem" for such a short series of only 10 episodes to date.  In fact the very first girl you get introduced to is an "old loli" archetype character who only really shows up in the very beginning and the very end of the series.  So characters just end up feeling like they’re thrown into the mix haphazardly to check a trope box here and there. At the end of the day though, I did manage to eke some enjoyment out of it despite all of its incredibly apparent flaws.  While at it’s heart it’s a derivative mess of moe cliche’s that takes a great deal of inspiration from far better series, it also sets itself apart in equal measures.  Enough so that it’s actually kind of entertaining and watchable.

My Sister, My Writer (Light Novel)

where will i now fulfill my urge for trash?

Not Recommended: My Sister, My Writer is a parade of cliches, taking a premise with potential and draping it in the most banal of elements, characters, and comedy.
