Fruits Basket is an anime produced by Studio Deen in Japan. It is based on the manga written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. Fruits Basket follows the story of cheerful high school student Tohru Honda. Through her kind and loving attitude, Tohru attempts to befriend and help each member of the strange and beautiful Sohma family. After loosing her mother in a terrible car accident, Tohru is orphaned. Rather than becoming a burden on her grandfather, she decides to work part-time after school and live on her own in a tent in the woods. The property on which she ends up living belongs to the Sohma family. Although the Sohma family does not usually accept strangers and outsiders, they are struck by Tohru’s charming personality. They immediately insist that she lives in their spacious home in exchange for cleaning and cooking. Soon after moving in with Yuki, Kyo and Shigure Sohma, Tohru discovers why the Sohma family is so secretive. Thirteen members of the family are tormented by a rather unusual curse. Whenever a cursed family member is hugged by a member of the opposite gender, they transform into one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Tohru immediately promises to keep the Sohma family secret; however, unbeknownst to Tohru, the Sohma’s curse has a much darker side. The cursed members of the Sohma family are not free to pursue their own lives or even find happiness. Akito Sohma is the head of the Sohma family, and he is possessive of the cursed Sohmas. As a result, he manipulates and controls them to keep them close to him. However, there is even more darkness to the curse, involving Kyo and the 13th zodiac. Kyo is possessed by the cat spirit. The cat spirit was cruelly excluded from the Chinese zodiac and suffers more than any of the other zodiacs. Despite the unpleasant reality of the true curse, Tohru accepts the challenge to help heal the Sohma family, even if it means facing a monster.
