Sakamichi is a die-hard otaku; he loves anime and manga, and rides his clunky bicycle over 90 kilometers to Akihabara each week for the latest toys and games. Upon entering high school, Sakamichi is thrilled to meet others that share his passion, but soon discovers that the anime club is defunct and in need of members. Meanwhile, a skilled cyclist and fellow classmate Shunsuke has his eye on the boy, having seen his incredible speed, even while riding such a heavy "mom cycle." Now, Sakamichi must decide if he wants to stick with his would-be anime club, or join Shunsuke and other new friends for the ride of his life in the Competitive Cycling Club, where fierce races and other adventures await them!

The anime will have two parts, one focusing on Yuusuke Makishima and the other on Jinpachi Toudou. Makishima’s story will detail how he joined the Souhoku bicycle racing club as a first year and met scorn from his seniors because of his strange style of dancing. Toudou’s story will reveal how he first got into road racing in his second year of middle school, when a friend challenged him to a race but he initially refused because he wanted to avoid helmet hair.

Positive
*It can’t be a surprise that I enjoyed this anime. I love cycling and LR! really focussed on the fun of cycling. Unlike its big brother YP, who focusses on the competitive side of cycling, LR! showed how fun cycling can be. Cruising the roads with your friends, getting to places you would otherwise never reach and setting and reaching goals. This anime created a step-up to cycling that was less steep than the one from YP, it made cycling reachable and I hope that people will be inspired to try it out after watching this anime. Because, as you know, in my opinion cycling is still the most beautiful sport in the world, it being competitive or recreative.

*Another thing where LR! differed from YP was in the amount of information it gave about cycling and the type of information. As I said, YP focusses on competitive cycling so it gives us a lot of information that has to do with competitive cycling like wind resistance. But LR! gave us more standard information that YP didn’t. LR! talks about nutrition, bike maintenance and how to ride safely at night and in rain. All things that YP didn’t touch since it doesn’t really apply to competitive cycling. So also here, LR! created that less steep step up to actually try cycling.
Negative
But LR! definitely also had its problems, the release of new episodes was delayed at several occasions and the final 2 episodes were delayed till February.
*And the episodes themselves weren’t perfect either. First of all I have to tell something about the animation and more specifically about the cycling animation. With that I mean how the characters and specifically the legs were animated when they were riding their bikes. It looked super robotic and everything but natural. Other cycling anime’s like YP and this season’s Minami Kamakura Cycling Club make the legs move in a way more natural way.
*Another thing about the animation. I think this anime wasn’t checked by someone who actually knows a thing or two about cycling. I can see that by the posture that the girls had on their bikes. It was most apparent with the smallest of them, Hinako. If you sit on a bike like that, you will break your back, her reach from the saddle to the handlebars was way to big. It was almost hysterical to look at.
*My final negative point is that the ultimate goal of this story being Ami riding the flèche is far from completed at the end. Ami still has a long way to go before she will be able to ride such a tour. I know because I’m currently training for my first flèche in September and that’s not something a newbie can do after just a few months of training. Most likely the original manga will go farther than this since it’s still ongoing today.
Conclusion
So as a conclusion, I really enjoyed LR! but it is a niche anime. People that aren’t into cycling or sports anime in general won’t feel the urge to watch this anime. But if you like sports anime I definitely recommend to give LR! a watch and maybe you’ll get bitten by the cycling microbe. So enough about me trying to promote cycling. LR! wasn’t perfect, there are better cycling anime’s out there when it comes to story telling and animation. So I’m going to rate Long Riders! at 3 stars. But as I said, give this anime a watch if your a fan of lighter sports anime.

This show is a bicycle themed ”slice of life” without a compettive element. It shows the up and downs of an unsportive plain but quirky college girl named Ami. Ami starts her new long distance cycling hobby beside her more experienced and level-headed friend Aoi. Quickly encountering girls of similar age with interest in the same hobby with more experience to guide her along her way. The series is mostly experienced through Ami’s perspective teaching the audience a few things about bicycles along the way. Ami struggles physically and mentally in this series at times however the series is mostly a happy go lucky one without any long lasting drama.  The series has a few comedic moments but isn’t a comedy either. It is definitely a slice of life show at heart. It is however very average and quite forgetable for a slice of life.
Animation wise this show is at best good enough and sometimes a bit mediocre. While the animation never got truly bad it had it’s moments were you could pause the anime and shake your head. The bicycles are often CGI but overal the CGI in this show blends in well and isn’t overabundant. It is generally avoided when making close ups of characters even while they are riding their bikes. However in shots were all girls are riding over and area and the background doesn’t pan you can expect it obviously.
However the character designs aren’t that unique or very cute. Ami is a rather plain but youthful looking ordinary every girl who outside of her personality could be thought as a self insert character by appearance.  Saki and Aoi have very similar "Yamato Nadeshiko" character designs being tall, developed and black haired. While Saki is goofy her goofy aspect is limited to her food intake which is a one note joke, surely. Hinako and Yayoi’s character designs stand out as being completely out there by contrast. Both possessing unnatural hair colours, their entire character designs play off each other with Hinako being a ”twin-tail legal loli” and Yayoi being a ”tall busty babe” which gives us a two or three scenes of breast envy in this show for comedy.
Sound wise the music track is quite forgetable the ending theme is high spirited and fits the show but isn’t anything amazing while the opening is very much what you’d expect from a slice of life show. The voice acting in this show is good for what it is with an experienced voice cast.  While some might argue with the voices of some characters they all were believable and got the general atmosphere that this series seemed to be going for over. From Ami’s dramatic overreactions to Aoi’s (fake) down to earthness, Hinako tsundere attitude, Yayoi’s ”big sisterness” and Saki’s  sprotiveness and gluttony there aren’t really any complaints there.
Overall, While a bicycle themed girls doing cute things show isn’t an amazing concept theycould have done more with it. Simply put it was ”a little too slice of life” for the most part with no real competitive element you have to use humour and ”cuteness” or ”moe” to keep things interesting. After watching this you can think it was fun but on the other hand personally I couldn’t shake the feeling that it could have been so much more. Most of the shows drama and comedy is completely reliant on  Ami’s  frequent silly expressions and dramatized emotional highs and lows. As amusing it is to see Ami make silly faces and how dramatic it is to face her own limits the entertainment element is stretched really thin due to the lack of variance. At some point Ami’s facial expressions and her overreactions just aren’t enough for comedy and what else there is to this series is limited and that is why this show just isn’t all it coud have been which is quite sad in some ways as there was no bicycle show like it before it aired.

I just binge-watched the first two seasons of Yowamuchi Pedal and I loved it. This movie is about what happens after as I’m sure you’ve already read in the synopsis. I liked how every character had their quirkiness. In the second season, Naruko really grew and so did Onoda and Iwaizumi. I’m looking forward to their future. I’m gonna binge watch the next two seasons after watching the other movie.
But, from what I watched previously there was one thing that was missing and this movie had it.
SPOILER AHEAD
What was missing in the first and second season you ask? The team led by Onoda while they all sing the Love Hime song. It was hilarious, even I felt slightly embarrassed for them. But it was awesome because it tied everything together.
I’m also really glad that Onoda gained some confidence and is no longer a closeted Otaku. Well, he wasn’t exactly hiding it but he isn’t embarrassed about it anymore. He just pulls the team into his Otaku world and talks all he wants about it, and even tho they aren’t interested, they just accept him and play along. He’s got some good friends.
END OF SPOILER
If you’ve seen the first two seasons I highly recommend you watch this.
Also, don’t take my scoring of this as if it isn’t a good movie or show overall (since this review also covers the previous seasons). It’s because I’ve seen many sports anime that I can’t score much higher than this. And it’s solely based on my opinion. Everyone’s taste in anime is different. I might score the next seasons higher depending on how I liked it. The fact that I binged this show, to me, already means it’s really good.
For me, anime is the only thing that makes sports fun to watch and when I hear the name of a sport I relate it to an anime.

High school is sort of that akward time for us all where we try to find out place in the world and try to make friends that have similar interests as us. For some it can be worse trying to accomplish this seemingly impossible feat. The main take away for Yowamushi Pedal is this:
You can conquer any challenge.
Story 8/10
The story is about Onoda Sakamichi, a friendless Otaku who goes into high school with the hopes of joining the anime club to finally make friends. His hopes are crushed though when he finds that the club has been cancelled due to a lack of members. As he tried to revive the club he runs into Imaizumi and Naruko–first years like him who joined the bycicle racing club, and managed to convince him to do the same despite his fears that he really had no place in the world of sports. Here he meets the third years, who mentor them all to become the strongest, fastest, and best that they can be.
Many can argue that Yowamushi Pedal is just a copy of Over Drive (because the plot is very very similar), but to me Yowapeda brings something a little different to the table, a weak character. Most sports anime/manga have the MC be really good, and kind of know it too. Since Onoda is weak and self concious of himself there is a very realistic feeling to the story–mainly the struggles and determination to become something great. It inspires me, and it makes me more involved with Onoda.
The anime pretty much follows the anime to a T–which brings up a major flaw–The pacing. The bulk of this anime is taken up by the Inter-High competition. You would think that with 38 episodes you could get through a relatively big chunk of this 3 day race out of the way. Well….sorry to say, but there is a reason why there is a second season. The last episode was left on a major cliff hanger, and for many who watched the series right as it was coming out found themselves to be severly disappointed and upset when the season ended in July and they found out that they had to wait until early October to continue the series.
Animation 9/10
Now I definitely didn’t get into Yowapeda for the art. The manga is rather brash with its art style and the characters often look disfigured when they are riding their bikes (Midosuji is a prime example). So I was really impressed with how well the animators did with cleaning it up. All of the characters are unique, with few characters being drawn to fit a particular stereotype (the three Sohoku first years are about it). My only complaint is that Imaizumi and Arakita are so similar looking that I had trouble distinguishing them in the manga.
The coloring is bright and colorful as is expected for it being made 2013-2014. However, it is not overly bright with "sheen bubbles" or a too exaggerated of a color scheme. It uses a straight forward color scheme to get the job done. The animation itself was pretty solid, which is always important in a sports anime.

Sound 9/10
The sounds was superb. It fit the moments perfectly, and was just enough to where is aided the emotion of the scene without overpowering it. Music has never gotten my heart racing as much as the soundtrack in Yowapeda. The three openings and ending themes were great too, which is unheard of coming from me. Normally due to time constraints I listen to the opening and ending once, unless one or the either was something special. I listened to all six theme songs without skipping them–I even have the soundtracks to listen to them all the time.

Character 9/10
When you walk into a sports anime you’re just basically counting the seconds until you see a major sterotypical character. And while Yowapeda exhumes the natural talent, elite and hot-head archtype with Onoda, Imaizumi and Naruko (respectively) they have their own quirks that really do make them unique. And what makes Yowapeda really shine are the character interactions. All of Sohoku really supports each other and works together to pull the team along (now whether this is efficient or not is neither here nor there).
What’s even more amazing with the close relationship they have with their rival school–Hakone High. They are supposed to be enemies, and I feel like with most sports anime I’ve seen, the rivals are just viewed as the bad guys to be defeated. In Yowapeda though the seniors all have a relationship with one another, creating the impression that these guys could in reality be friends–and even SHOW signs of friendship during the race. What’s even better is that most of the characters in Hakone get their own little background story, so now not only do these guys have more demension to them, I actually care about them and feel for them!
I love all of the characters in Yowamushi Pedal, they all bring something to the table to make the series enjoyable. Yes, even Midosuji, for as fucking creepy as he is, he brings spice into the competition.Ugh….so creepy
Overall 9.5/10
Yowamushi pedal really is a great anime. Onoda is a very relatible character and the underlying theme is inspiring. Yes, the pacing is bad, but you’ll soon forget it in the heat of the races, waiting on the edge of your seat to see who wins.
Now if you really dislike sports anime, then I would probably skip over this. Because with the genere they try to take the sport and make it as cool and as awesome as humanely as possible. Other than that you should give it a try.

YP was the first anime that I started following from week to week back in september 2013 when the first episode aired. It was recommended to me by a close friend and I’m so happy that he did that.
(WARNING SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD)
Positive
*First of all I’m a big cycling fan so I was extremely happy that there was finally a good anime about cycling. There are some other cycling anime’s out there that I tried like for instance Overdrive but they aren’t that good. Yowamushi Pedal created a really good cycling anime even for non cyclists. YP educates it’s viewers as a lot of cycling techniques are explained along the way. I can see why the anime is such a succes in Japan. 52 episodes, 2 movies, CD’s, stage plays and a game in the making proof the succes of YP.
*The story and tension that goes along with the races glued me to my screen. YP was my weekly Monday appointment and every single week I was looking forward to the next episode. The tension that’s build up during the races puts you at the tip of your seat and makes you come back week after week after week.
*Another big positive point were the characters, every one of theme is very well worked out with loads of different personalities. We also get backstories for every single character from YP and there are quite the number of them: about 15 of them. Each with their own unique and intriguing backstory. My favorite characters were Kinjou and Arakita. The determination that Kinjou shows and the way he can motivate people makes him the perfect team captain. Arakita is just one crazy dude and for me the most interesting character from the entire anime.
*Related to that is the development that our 3 main protagonists (Onoda, Naruko and Imaizumi) go through. All three of them make big progression in their character especially mentally.
*A last positive point were the songs. I enjoyed every intro and ending song from YP all 10 of them. They’re all on my IPhone and I regularly listen to them when I’m training indoors. And then there is of course the Hime song which makes you laugh out loud multiple times throughout the anime when a certain character sings it.
Negative
*I thought that it was a shame that they didn’t do anything with the romantic possibilities in YP. There was clearly a connection between Onoda and Kanzaki on one hand and between Manami and Miyahara on the other hand. I would have loved to see something evolving in these 2 relationships but there wasn’t. A missed chance in my eyes.
*I had a bit of a problem with the way that some characters left the anime. This start to happen in Grande Road. For most characters their exit was very well done but for Midousuji and Machimiya it was quite superficial. I don’t really understand why Midousuji falls to the ground all of a sudden. It happens without clear reason to me. Than for the Hiroshima team, when I saw the first opening of Grande Road and saw that there was an entirely new team I thought that they would play a major role in the second season but after approximately 10 episodes they just leave the anime never to return again.
*A last negative point is really nitpicking from me because 95% of the viewers won’t even notice this. I noticed it because I’m a cyclist myself. I found that there were some improbabilities and impossibilities in the race mechanics, going from gear ratios to characters who seem to have an endless amount of stamina. An example of these improbabilities is the training camp where the riders have to ride 1000km in 4 days. That’s something that even professional road cyclists don’t do. But again this is nitpicking from me and the most of you  won’t notice these flaws.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, I had an absolute blast watching YP. I enjoyed it from episode 1 all the way to episode 52 without one moment that I thought that the anime was declining. No, it just keeps getting better and better until the end. I’m going to rate YP at 4 stars and I would definitely recommend it even if you’re not a fan of cycling.

The narration of Hill Climb Girl tells you the story of two kids in the high school who race up the hill as a part of the competition. This specifically portrays the enormous energy that these kids perceive to do the same. This certainly cheers one up and the person starts fascinating about cycling for sure. It has been produced by Studio Khara. This studio is specialized in taking up a level game stronger than others in sports anime series like this cycling anime show.

This cycling anime is independently made and it is again about a bicycle race in Spain. Nasu: Summer in Andalusia typically focuses on the character that takes part in the final hours of a bicycle race. It revives your notions of courage, family strength, and determination to another level. Cycling anime generally does the same from its core.
