With a few simple steps you can change your Netflix region to a country like Japan and start watching Japanese Netflix, which includes Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor: Episode 13.
Alright the first anime we will be watching for the anime watch group is Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
What a great episode! We got to learn the character who is Kaiji, a hooligan whose at the very bottom of his life. Through his despair, he resorts to drinking and gambling.
This episode also sets up the behaviors of the money lenders. They prey on those foolish enough to believe them hoping to entrap men like kaiji. This will hopefully be explored more thoroughly throughout the first arc.
In the cruise, they are expected to payback 1.5% interest for every 10 minutes they borrowed the money. A max of 10 million or a min of 1 million can be borrowed. This money can be used however you want, but you must repay the principle and interest as well as your debt to break even. For kaiji this is approximately $17.5 million (10mill principle + 4mill interest +3.25 debt). More money means you have to pay back a lot more, but you would also have more options and opportunity.
I feel this episode is a good setup for the world Kaiji is in along with the sorts of people Kaiji is caught up with. Also begins to tease the sort of meta thinking that's at play in this show.
Very solid first episode, going in I thought the premise was ridiculous but actually watching Kaiji get dragged into this ill-advised adventure actually felt realistic in a sort of fucked up Kafka-esque way. The idea of restricted rock paper scissors also seems very interesting, especially considering that the usual variant of the game is rather boring.
Episode 1 discussion, don't read if you have not watched:
The money is meant to be used as capital to help pay back the debt you entered with. So, if you owed $100,000 and you borrow $1 million you would need 1.1 million to break even, not including the interest. In kaiji's case he would need aprox 17.5 million to break even assuming he stays on board the full 4 hours. (10mil principle +4mill interest +3.25 debt) More money can be better as you would have more leverage throughout the event.
You haven't missed anything. Just watch the episode now and participate in the discussion. This thread isn't going anywhere in a hurry. Plus there are still 25 episodes left we haven't watched (or 51 if we watch season 2 as well).
However the Chairman annihilates that secret winning lot on the first try. Kaiji, who goes second, ultimately picks a random lot while praying to God. On his second turn, the Chairman reveals that he could have easily taken out the winning lot on his first turn but he let it go to give Kaiji a chance, and then the Chairman takes out the winning lot without breaking a single sweat.
